Daycare centers in Basel at the limit - Telebasel report

According to the kibesuisse study, Swiss daycare centers are suffering losses. Tariff structures make it difficult to cover costs, and the sector is characterized by high workloads and demanding working conditions. Basel is planning daycare reforms from August 2024, while the situation in Baselland remains tense. TeleBasel sheds light on the topic with viewpoints from familea.

Every third daycare center in Switzerland makes a loss! At the beginning of December, kibesuisse published a study on this for the first time. With the current tariff structures, it is difficult to run daycare centers to cover costs. The workload for the teams in the daycare centers is high. The working conditions are demanding and there is a lack of financial resources. The regulations in the cantons vary greatly.

In Basel, wages and the staffing ratio will be improved for specialist staff from August 2024 with the upcoming daycare reform. Parents will also receive more support. In Baselland, however, the situation remains tense.

The TeleBasel report from 22.12.23 highlights the various aspects: Jay John, FaBe Kinder at the Hirzbrunnen daycare center, and Monika Bitterli, Managing Director at familea, also give their viewpoints in the video.
